Artistic directors play a pivotal role in the vision of a ballet company. They are responsible for the artistic direction, selection and development of productions as well as training the dancers. With their expertise, passion, and dedication, artistic directors ensure that ballet companies thrive artistically and continue to inspire audiences with their performances.

KEVIN O’HARE CBE

Director, The Royal Ballet

Appointed in July 2012, Kevin is responsible for driving the artistic direction of the Company. He is committed to the promotion of outstanding creativity and artistic excellence, developing talent and widening the Company’s performing platform.

Ashley Wheater MBE

Artistic Director of The Joffrey Ballet

Since his appointment in 2007 as artistic director of The Joffrey Ballet, his passion and commitment to the Joffrey have been evident in the quality that he has brought to the dancing and to the repertoire. He has invited world-renowned choreographers, as well as fresh young talent, to create new work for the company.Â

Gen Horiuchi

Executive and Artistic Director, Saint Louis Ballet

Horiuchi became Executive and Artistic Director of Saint Louis Ballet in 2000 and created more than 20 original works including seven full-length ballets for the company. Â

LOURDES LOPEZ

Artistic Director, Miami City Ballet

She became Artistic Director of Miami City Ballet in 2012, bringing with her a nearly 40-year career in dance, television, teaching and arts management. As a Soloist and Principal Dancer with New York City Ballet, Lopez danced for two legends of the art form, George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins.Â

JONATHAN STAFFORD

Artistic Director, New York City Ballet

In December 2017, he was appointed to lead NYCB’s interim artistic team and in February 2019, he was named Artistic Director of NYCB and SAB.

WENDY WHELAN

Associate Artistic Director, New York City Ballet

One of the most acclaimed dancers of her generation, she followed a storied 30-year career at NYCB with a variety of multi-disciplinary projects with cultural organizations around the world. She was named NYCB Associate Artistic Director in February 2019.

Peter Boal

Artistic Director, PNB

In 2005, he retired from New York City Ballet to become Artistic Director of PNB.

Ib Andersen

Artistic Director, Ballet Arizona

ÂIb Andersen was named Artistic Director of Ballet Arizona and The School of Ballet Arizona in 2000.

NICK MULLIKIN

Artistic Director, Nashville Ballet

Nick Mullikin joined Nashville Ballet in 2015, was promoted to Associate Artistic Director in 2018, and was named Artistic Director and CEO in 2023.

HOPE MUIR

Artistic Director, The National Ballet of Canada

On January 1, 2022, Hope was named Joan and Jerry Lozinski Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada.
